The Center for Career Development is excited to announce that we are sponsoring an Externship Program from January 8-12, 2024, and January 15-22, 2024, to coincide with Winter Break 2024.

Background

Our mission is to support college into career transitions by holistically preparing students for meaningful professional lives. Holistic preparation embodies guided self-awareness and personal discovery, experiential learning, leadership development and an understanding of the value of social capital. At Washington College, through The Center for Career Development, students are provided with the tools to support career readiness and empowered to demonstrate the values of liberal learning throughout their professional lives.

 What is an Externship?

An externship is a short-term supplemental experience and sometimes referred to as a job shadowing experience. Like an internship, it provides an opportunity for students to get some experience exposure yet with some notable differences. These experiences are shorter in duration (e.g.,1-day, 2-days, etc.), offer students the opportunity to explore various job or career areas, and help reinforce academic/theoretical concepts learned in the classroom.

Who is eligible to participate in the Externships?

Freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors of all majors are eligible to participate in externships. However, some externship hosts may prefer rising juniors or seniors, yet we encourage all to apply as this is a unique career shadowing activity that helps student’s formulate ideas about job or careers choices. Students are matched with hosts based upon the quality of application materials and their involvement with The Career Center of Career Development.

How long are externships, and what am I committing to?

The externship experiences, slated for January 8, 2024, to January 12, 2024, and January 15, 2024, to January 19, 2024,  vary in length (e.g., 1-day, 2- days, etc.). Furthermore, we have strived to secure externship experiences across a variety of career or job areas (please see below for suggested externship activities). Externship hosts span Washington College alum, employer partners, and ‘friends of Washington College.’
