SMBC hosts a 10-week Summer Intern Program for undergraduate students who will have the opportunity to work on teams, be exposed to significant firm-wide projects within their respective business areas and support a range of deals with our clients.
We offer many different opportunities including building financial models, developing client presentations, conducting research, and observing client meetings – all to improve their understanding of the global banking industry.

Leveraged Finance (SCAD)
Sponsor Finance (SFG)
Sponsor Finance’s primary mission is to establish strong relationships with private equity sponsors. SFG is a well-established and rapidly growing platform in the US which will offer firsthand experience into the private equity space. Candidates will get direct exposure to underwriting transactions as well as coverage of various industries.
Portfolio Management (PMG)
The Portfolio Management Group supports the bank’s leveraged loan business. The Group is primarily responsible for monitoring the credit quality for portfolio companies owned by Private Equity firms and also manages any amendment and underwriting activities to support these businesses during the tenor of the bank’s relationship.
Lender Finance (LFG)
SMBC’s Lender Finance Group provides strategic credit-based financing solutions to Middle Market loan originators and asset managers. In connection with a CLO where SMBC is lead arranger, LFG may provide Ramp-up Facilities for CLO managers to accumulate collateral.
The Structured Placement Group is the dedicated U.S. Private Placement (USPP) team within SMBC Nikko. With a focus on project bond and corporate financings, the team provides global clients access to the USPP investor base. This investor base comprises many North American and select European and Asian pension funds, insurance companies and other large institutions interested in investment opportunities around the world. The Structured Placement Group has been extremely active in a diverse set of industries, including renewable energy, oil & gas, infrastructure and transportation.
Project Finance (SDAD)
SMBC’s Global Structured Finance team is one of the world’s leading project finance powerhouse. We provide debt and equity services to clients globally and have strong market positioning. We provide a variety of financing solutions for large scale infrastructure projects including conventional and renewable power plants, transmission lines, mining, oil and gas facilities, toll roads, ports, airports, bridges and hospitals across US and Canada. Our typical products are structuring of project finance, financial advisory to project developers, long / short term loan to project, large scale underwriting of the loans, bond (144A, US private placement) arrangement, Export Credit Agency financing and M&A.
Real Estate Finance
Our desk is a client-facing division of Specialized Finance Department, responsible for delivering the full front-to-back spectrum of non-recourse commercial real estate financing. We finance the following types of real estate: multifamily apartments, logistics centers, office buildings, retail shopping centers, hotels, data centers and so on. Our customers are the world’s top-class real estate investors, as well as Japanese and Asian investors, as we leverage our long-standing history and wide client coverage in the Asian market.
SMBC Leasing & Finance (SMBC LF)
SMBC Leasing and Finance, Inc. is a client-facing subsidiary of SMBC, responsible for delivering value-added, asset finance solutions to SMBC’s core customer base through bespoke leasing products, with offices in the US, United Kingdom, Germany and Australia. How Our Program Works
Our Summer Intern Program is designed for students who completed their junior year.
This 10-week program commences in June and includes:
– Training with on-the-desk experience
– Senior Speaker Series
– Japanese cultural activities
– Social networking activities
– Volunteer Day with a local nonprofit
– Mentorship opportunity with both a junior and senior mentor at SMBC
The successful candidate will possess or demonstrate the following personal and professional attributes:
– Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree from an accredited university with a graduation date of December 2022 or May 2023; excellent academic record
– 3.2 GPA or higher
– Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with specific ability to communicate concepts and ideas concisely
– Financial modeling/valuation and analytical skills; keen interest in finance and markets
– Ability to comfortably interact with clients in a professional and mature manner
– Outstanding ethics, integrity, and judgment
– Intellectual curiosity
– Comfort in and commitment to a strong teamwork environment
– Highly organized, detail oriented, self-driven, and motivated
– Advanced Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills and the ability to quickly learn new software applications
