Note: Camp was held virtually in 2020, we do not yet know the format for 2021 (virtual, in-person, or hybrid), for that reason, we ask that applicants are planning to be in the Baltimore area over the summer.

This position assists in the delivery of a high-quality environmental education literacy-focused summer program for elementary-aged students, ultimately improving reading, math, and science skills while increasing environmental literacy and exposure to the natural world as a part of SuperKids Camp. The Intern facilitates a curriculum focused on play and outdoor recreation that helps instill in campers a natural curiosity for the world around them and the importance of an active lifestyle.

1. Assist with Delivery of Instruction

a. Assist counselor in delivery of interactive literacy-based environmental education lessons, provided by Parks & People Foundation, to SuperKids campers

b. Conduct daily delivery of outdoor play and recreation curriculum

c. Assist in engagement of students around environmental stewardship and encourage positive behaviors

d. Assist with adherence to schedule through smooth and timely transition between daily activities

e. Assist enrichment providers with planned activities

f. Assist with classroom management in accordance with camp guidelines and Parks & People policy

g. Assist with independent reading sessions through individual and small group coaching sessions

h. Attend and participate in staff planning meetings

i. Participate in other camp activities as requested and as appropriate to position

j. Be a positive role model for campers and demonstrate good environmental stewardship

2. Assist with Supervision of Participants

a. Assist with supervision of students on planned field trips and outdoor exploration experiences

b. Ensure that all students are actively engaged in the learning process

c. Utilize positive behavioral management techniques

d. Ensure students behave in a safe, respectful, and orderly manner

e. Assist in meal distribution and clean-up

3. Participate in the Internship Program

a. Attend all orientation and evening sessions, as scheduled

b. Submit all required assignments

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Be a rising sophomore, junior or senior at a 2 or 4-year post-secondary institution

• Ability to assist with delivery of lesson plans and instructions appropriate for grade level

• Ability to connect and communicate with youth

• Ability to make accommodations for the diverse learner

• Good oral/written communication skills

• Outstanding human relation skills needed to inspire and motivate students

• Good time-management skills needed to handle multiple, concurrent classroom activities which serves the needs of students
