Rolling start dates; gain hands-on experience in the healthcare field and travel to Ecuador!
All About the Internship
This health and medical internship in Ecuador will provide you with insight into global health issues, urgent care and medical practice in an international context. Be a part of the bigger picture as you assist the provincial government with their goals of improving healthcare quality and access for vulnerable populations.
Shadow local doctors and nurses as they receive patients on a daily basis. Specialties include general medicine, dentistry, gynecology, pediatrics, clinical lab and trauma. The project also has a mobile clinic that serves remote locations in the province.
Depending on your skills and interests, you may be able to focus on sexual and reproductive health at a medical center. In that role, you would be able to visit rural Ecuadorian communities, providing medical attention and helping to educate young adults in family planning.

Getting University Credit
You may be able to gain university credit for your experience abroad. We recommend speaking to your study abroad advisor or academic department to learn more about your options. Many universities offer credit, and may classify our program as an internship, experiential education, a global experience or an academic experience, and here at Kaya we can work with you to meet any specific requirements your university may have.
Your institution may already be affiliated with Kaya to provide these credits, so ask a Kaya advisor for more details first!

What skills do you need?
If you are a medical, biology or nursing student, you will be able to apply. You will be asked to submit your CV/resume and to attend a Skype interview to be considered for this placement. Participants should also be open-minded, flexible, patient, caring and passionate. You must speak Spanish (level B1 Intermediate User of CEFR) to get the most out of this placement and to contribute effectively to the hospital, clinic or medical center. It is suggested that medical interns who want to get the most out of this placement should sign up for medical Spanish lessons in Quito prior to commencing this placement. Even those who are fluent in Spanish would benefit from these lessons. Interns are asked to complete a learning diary during their placement and to produce a presentation about what they learned for the local team at the end of the internship.
