Each year, Harvard Pre-College Program hires approximately 40 students to serve as proctors who live in Harvard residences and work with the pre-college students. Proctors work with Pre-College students and provide the supervision, information, advising, discipline, and social activities needed to create a safe, hospitable environment that is conducive to an academically productive summer experience. Harvard students and students from other undergraduate institutions may apply for the Proctor position. Proctoring in the Pre-College Program is a full-time position. Any commitment outside of proctoring must be approved by the assistant director of the Harvard Pre-College Program.

Under the direction of HSS leadership, the assistant director of Pre-College Program, and the Summer School resident deans, proctors work with Pre-College students and provide the supervision, information, advising, discipline, and social activities needed to create a safe, hospitable environment that is conducive to an academically productive summer experience. The Harvard Pre-College Program proctor position offers undergraduate students an opportunity to gain practical experience in mentoring, crisis management, and planning and facilitating residential activities to engage talented students. In addition to the proctor role, professional development seminars will be provided to further discuss various functional areas in the field of higher education.

Proctors:

  • Attend and actively participate in staff training and professional development
  • Assist with check-in, orientation and check-out which takes place on three Fridays and Sundays
  • Encourage students to attend Pre-College Passport events, host and take attendance for assigned activities
  • Plan and facilitate Passport activities designed to promote community and sense of belonging
  • Chaperone Passport and academic fieldtrips on campus and trips to off-campus destinations
  • Complete all administrative tasks including incident reports, interaction reports, and duty logs
  • Accompany program participants to Harvard University Health Services and/or hospital
  • Serve as a mentor and resource about HSS policies, procedures, and events
  • Check-in residents for curfew each night at 11pm
  • Meet with residents in groups and 1:1s for intentional interactions, unit meetings and meals
  • Abide by and enforce HSS policies and report unsafe and inappropriate behavior
  • Assist students by maintaining visibility and availability
  • Participate in a 24-hour on-call rotation for emergencies
  • Attend all-staff, sub-staff, and one-on-one meetings
  • Abide by the policies and procedures detailed on the Summer School and Harvard coronavirus websites

Proctor Commitment

  • Proctors must be in residence from noon on Tuesday, June 13 through noon on Saturday, August 5, including all nights and weekends. Proctors may not schedule return flights home that require them to leave campus before noon on the final day of the session, Saturday, August 5, 2023.
  • A curfew of 11:00pm exists for all Harvard Pre-College Program participants. Proctors are expected to observe curfew and stay in their assigned House from 11:00pm to 6:00am.
  • The Pre-College Proctor position is full-time; therefore, any outside commitments (ex. online courses, volunteering, etc.) must be approved by the Assistant Director.
