Salary Range: $85,000.00 To 95,000.00 Annually

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Director of Major Gifts will work collaboratively to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors for the annual fund, endowment, exhibitions, restricted giving, planned giving, and special initiatives. The Director of Major Gifts will work with the major gifts team to cultivate a more diverse pipeline of prospective donors, evaluating and enhancing all aspects of annual fundraising so as to better incorporate the museum’s commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEAI).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manages the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of a portfolio of up to 100 current and prospective donors with $250K+ capacity, producing $1.5 in annual revenue.
  • Oversees the efforts for planned giving activity to manage marketing and website messages, to steward the Eliza Laughlin Society, and to raise awareness of the significance of planned giving for both long term sustainability and operating budget support.
  • Manages two major giving staff in support of major giving objectives.
  • Identifies and develops new prospects for The Phillips Collection through donor and staff connections, research, and database analysis.
  • Plans the calendar of annual major giving activities and events.
  • Prepares annual major giving budget for revenue and expenses.
  • Works with the Gala Committee and solicits individual gifts for the Annual Fundraising Gala.
  • Attends the following trustee and volunteer committee meetings: Development Committee, Gala Committee, and Governance Committee.
  • Oversees music fundraising program.
  • Represents the Phillips Collection at events organized for donors and prospects.
  • Collaborates with development leadership to continue to innovate and improve fundraising initiatives, generate new ideas, and streamline operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Five years of development experience in a not-for-profit environment, preferably in the arts.
  • Record of securing major gifts of $10,000 and above.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement effective cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for major donors.
  • Experience with leading, managing and mentoring direct report employees.
  • Interest and ability to work collaboratively as part of a high functioning team.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of the fundraising landscape of the Washington Metropolitan area.
  • Experience with Blackbaud/Altru databases preferred.
