ASSISTANT CITY ATTORNEY NEEDED

POSITION OPEN UNTIL FILLED

TARGET ENTRY SALARY: $75,437 – $79,209

The City of Clearwater Legal Department is seeking an Attorney to perform a variety of professional level duties and responsibilities involving the delivery of legal services of varying complexity. Legal services include direct assistance to the City Attorney on special projects or assignments. Work involves the review and/or preparation of legal documents, the preparation of legal opinions, and the preparation and review of resolutions, ordinances, and other proposed legislation. Responsibilities may include representation of the City or various departments in litigation and/or administrative proceedings. Salary range is $75,437.15 – $120,699.45 annually. Individual may be hired at the Senior Assistant City Attorney classification dependent upon experience and qualifications ($96,279.04 – $154.046.36)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Functions: — Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 Duties may include assignments in a specialized area of law based upon the incumbent’s area of expertise.

 The selected applicant will have multiple departmental clients such Marine and Aviation, Community Redevelopment Agency, Parking, Planning and Development, Solid Waste, Stormwater and Telecommunications.

 The position also entails representation of the City at various Boards. Attendance at City Council work sessions and Council meetings will be required.

 Performs assignments independently and makes legal determinations in matters of substantial importance, subject to review for consistency with policy, possible precedent effect and overall effectiveness.

 Conducts investigations independently and negotiations on behalf of the City to resolve legal problems.

 Prepares or reviews resolutions, ordinances, and other proposed legislation of a complex or unique nature.

 Prepares or reviews documents of a complex nature.

 Performs assignments independently and makes legal determinations in matters of substantial importance, subject to review for consistency with policy, possible precedent effect and overall effectiveness.

 Represents the office of the City Attorney, elected officials, and departments at conferences, hearings, or trials.

 Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A valid State driver’s license is required.

Possession of a State of Florida license as a practicing attorney and admission to the Florida Bar.

Education and Experience:

Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor Degree or equivalent with admission to the Florida Bar, PLUS some training, education or experience in the public sector, particularly at the local government level, is desirable. Experience as a law clerk, or research assistant is also desirable; Two years professional experience as an attorney is preferred OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
