Museum of the Ironworker Interpreter Internship
The Catoctin Furnace Historical Society, Inc. (CFHS) is offering an interpreter internship opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students of museum studies, archaeology, anthropology, art history, history, public history, archival science, or related fields. This internship will provide the student with a unique opportunity to gain beneficial learning and valuable training working alongside trained museum interpreters and curators. Prior experience in working with historic sites or collections is desirable but not necessary. The internship is full time (Wednesday to Sunday, 40 hours per week) for 12 weeks in the summer of 2021 and can be tied to academic credit if desired. The goal of the internship is to be the onsite interpreter working with our volunteer docents at the new Museum of the Ironworker in Catoctin Furnace near Thurmont, Frederick County, Maryland. Catoctin Furnace is the site of an historic iron furnace and company village which was in operation from the 18th to the early 20th century. CFHS will train the interpreter intern on site.
The successful applicant will be required to travel on a daily basis to the Museum of the Ironworker (12610 Catoctin Furnace Road, Thurmont, Maryland 21788) in Catoctin Furnace over the course of the internship. A modest travel budget is available.
