Full-Time Internships Expires January 29, 2021

Editorial internships with the American Horticultural Society are open to any college-level student of journalism, English, horticulture, environmental science, or related fields, and to adults with relevant experience who are making a career change or seeking additional training.

While working closely with the staff of The American Gardener magazine, interns will gain experience in all facets of the editorial and production processes for a national, four-color magazine. Primary duties include researching and writing short articles, proofreading and fact-checking, and coordinating author and photographer submissions.

As part of a broad-based exposure to gardening and horticultural communication, the editorial intern will also participate with other AHS interns in guided field trips to prominent local gardens such as the U.S. National Arboretum, Dumbarton Oaks, and Mount Vernon.

Two six-month internship sessions are available each year. Interns are paid $10.00 per hour and work a 37.5-hour week. Priority application deadlines are as follows: Winter/Spring (November 11); Summer/Fall (February 10). Beyond the priority deadline, applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Applications for the editorial internship should include the following:

  • completed application form https://ahsgardening.org/gardening-programs/internship-programs/communications/
  • resume
  • two writing samples
  • three references (including names, daytime phone numbers, and person’s title or relationship to you)

Interns are responsible for making their own housing arrangements, but an information sheet that lists local shared-house rental options and apartment contacts is available upon request.

If you have questions about the internship, or would like to request an application packet sent as an e-mail attachment, please e-mail internships@ahsgardening.org.
