Overview of Internship – Print/Digital Publications
An 8- to 10-week summer learning experience, offered remotely, for an undergraduate or graduate student interested in developing skills and gaining knowledge relating to the production of a print magazine and online publications and social media at the American Association of School Administrators, d/b/a AASA, The School Superintendents Association. AASA is a professional organization with about 10,000 members nationwide, most of whom work as school district administrators overseeing K-12 education.
The intern can expect an educational experience with various hands-on activities and exploration supervised by several members of AASA’s professional staff.
This internship is intended as a four- or five-day-a-week program (32-40 hours weekly) beginning the first week of June. It will run until the first or second week of August.
This internship is unpaid, but eligible for academic or course credit if approved by your educational institution. The intent of the internship is that the selected student must be eligible to receive credit or registered to receive credit through their university or college upon successful completion of the internship with AASA.
Learning Opportunities
At School Administrator magazine, the intern will:
• learn about the various stages of the editorial and production processes;
• participate with the magazine staff at periodic planning meetings;
• learn about the publication design process through a shadowing day with the magazine’s outside design firm;
• participate in an outside networking event with publication and communication staff and/or a press event involving K-12 education issues;
• learn about the connection between the magazine and other departments of the association (e.g., public policy, communications).
The intern will gain significant hands-on experience at the magazine, which will likely include these activities:
• review manuscripts being evaluated by the magazine staff;
· rewrite press releases as short news items for publication;
• fact-check and proofread;
· handle the first edit of a book review or comparable editorial file;
· learn about leading issues in K-12 education.
With AASA’s digital team, the intern will:
• receive an introduction to a variety of e-communication tools, platforms and websites;
• learn about the association’s use of social media;
• discover how the work of AASA’s digital team supports the work of other departments in the organization.
The intern will likely assist with the following digital publishing tasks:
· sending push notifications to AASA’s mobile app subscribers;
· writing and publishing blog posts;
· researching relevant news and updates for use in e-newsletters;
· drafting social media posts for AASA’s Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook channels;
· running analytics reporting within Sprout Social.
Honorarium
Upon successful completion of the 8- to 10-week experience, the intern will receive an $800 stipend from AASA.
