About the position: (First Book has a hybrid work environment. This is not a 100% remote position)
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller will be responsible for oversight of finance, accounting and reporting activities. The Controller will be involved in supporting presentations to the board finance and audit committee and will work closely with the senior leadership team.
The Controller will supervise a team and lead day-to-day accounting and reporting activities. The Controller will ensure that First Book has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct audits. The Controller will work closely with organization’s leaders and their staff to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures to support program operations.
In addition, she or he will partner with the CFO, senior leadership, and information technology (IT) staff to enhance and better integrate finance, operations, and IT functions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.
- Analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of First Book’s financial status.
- Support the CFO in board reporting and engaging the board’s audit committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.
- Manage the annual financial audit and coordinating activities of external auditors.
- Participate in and oversee the preparation of annual tax documents with organization’s accounting firms.
- In partnership with IT and finance leadership, oversees the selection, implementation, and maintenance of Accounting and Financial systems.
- Provide management with information vital to sound financial decision-making processes.
- Supervise and manage the workflow of employees who work under the controller..
- Monitor a company’s financial reports and determine ways to reduce costs.
- Keep up to date on financial markets and the economic environment to help drive recommendations on how to ensure sustainable operations and evaluate new revenue sources.
- Understand the financials of First Book to meet legal requirements and keep the financial state in good standing.
Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required:
- Candidate must be a certified public accountant.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
- 10 years’ experience in a senior level finance or accounting position, nonprofit and/or Controller experience preferred.
- Exceptional financial analysis skills/capabilities/experience.
- Experience in development, implementation and management of corporate strategy and budgeting in a company during a rapid growth period.
- Ability to provide leadership and coordination of financial functions and their applications toward larger vision and strategy.
- Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and management about the finances of the organization and explain financial recommendations.
- Proven attention to detail, organization, and project management skills.
Education and/or Experience:
- BA/BS; Concentration in Finance or Accounting preferred.
- Active CPA required,
- MBA/MAC desirable
